Global Leaders Gather in London to Discuss One Health Approach to Climate Crisis

The global community is facing an escalating climate crisis, and the need for a comprehensive response that considers the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health has never been more urgent. Recently, PATH partnered with the Commonwealth to host a groundbreaking event titled ‘One Health approach: moving from siloed thinking to smart and systemic action’ on May 9, 2024, in London.

Global leaders, policymakers, and experts gathered at the Commonwealth Secretariat’s headquarters to address the critical intersection of human and planetary health in the face of climate change. The event kicked off with opening remarks from Dr. Nabeel Goheer and Deborah Jamieson, setting the stage for insightful discussions.

In a video welcome address, PATH President and CEO, Nikolai Gilbert, underscored the profound impact of climate change on global health and emphasized the urgency of taking action. He highlighted the importance of the One Health approach, warning that failure to address it effectively could lead to an increase in epidemics and pandemics, especially affecting the most vulnerable populations.

Hon. Julia Gillard, Chairperson of Wellcome Trust and former Prime Minister of Australia, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the Commonwealth’s advocacy for global health. She stressed the need for a coordinated One Health approach that considers the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems collectively. Gillard highlighted that climate change now plays a critical role in every health issue and urged leaders to prioritize adaptation to climate change impacts by investing in resilient infrastructure and innovative solutions.
