Gastroenterologist shares tips to reduce cancer risk

More than 200 types of cancer have been identified by medics. They occur when abnormal cells grow and divide, often spreading to organs and tissues. Cancer is now the second leading cause of death across the world, accounting for one in six deaths.

Genetics and age are sometimes thought to play a part in how likely we are to get cancer. But other risk factors include things that are within our control, such as our lifestyle habits.

Gastroenterologist Doctor Saurabh Sethi, from the US, has now taken to social media to share ways in which you could cut your cancer risk. He has shared four tips on TikTok, Express reports.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol comes with a number of health risks, including cancer. Dr Sethi said: “Cut down on alcohol because it’s been linked to cancers of the stomach, colon, liver, pancreas and breast.” The advice he shared is backed by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Its advice says: “The less alcohol you drink, the lower your risk for cancer.” According to the CDC, alcohol can raise your risk for mouth and throat, larynx, oesophagus, bowel, liver and breast cancer. It said: “Some studies show that drinking three or more alcoholic drinks per day increases the risk of stomach and pancreatic cancers.”
