Fubo announces price hike for streaming plans and explores new revenue streams

Virtual MVPD Fubo has announced a $5 per month increase in the cost of its three English-language streaming plans. The CEO, David Gandler, also discussed the potential use of streaming data sales to generate revenue at an investor conference.

New subscribers are currently subject to the price hike, while existing customers will experience the increase in their next billing cycle after February 1. The base Pro package now costs just under $80 per month, the Elite plan increased to $90 per month, and the Premier plan is about $100 per month. Additionally, the monthly price of a regional sports network fee has been raised by $1.

Fubo subscribers to a Starz add-on will also have to pay an additional $1 per month for the network. Fubo’s statement emphasized new content additions and higher programming fees demanded by partners, noting the aggregation of over 300 sports, news, and entertainment networks, with over 70 new channels launched in 2023. The company also plans to offer unlimited Cloud DVR to all subscribers in the coming months.

Despite the price hikes, Fubo is looking to expand its freemium content to keep viewers engaged and drive advertising revenue. The company has positioned itself as a sports-first streaming service, competing against other virtual MVPDs like YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Sling TV.

Fubo aims to retain users by offering free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels and exploring AVOD, pay-per-view, and TVOD options. CEO David Gandler highlighted the importance of building out the freemium business to provide greater flexibility and different types of packages for subscribers.
