FSIS Public Health Alert for Misbranded Frozen Mushroom Risotto Products

FSIS Issues Public Health Alert For Frozen Mushroom Risotto Products Due To Misbranding And Undeclared Allergens

Washington, Jan. 5, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for frozen mushroom risotto products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen. The product labeled as porcini mushroom risotto bites may actually contain hot dogs in puff pastry, which contain sesame, a known allergen, that is not declared on the product label. FSIS issued this public health alert to ensure that consumers with an allergy to sesame are aware that these products should not be consumed. Although a recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase, consumers are urged not to consume the affected products.

The frozen Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites packages, which may actually contain hot dogs in puff pastry, were produced on April 11, 2023. The affected product is 7.5-oz. cardboard packages containing “Wild Fork Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites” with lot code 101231, “BEST BY DATE: 10/11/2024”, and EST. 39896 on the side of the box. These items were shipped to retail locations in California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. The products bear establishment number “EST. 39896” on the side of the box and do not have a USDA mark of inspection.

The issue came to light after the firm notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about a consumer complaint reporting that the hot dogs in puff pastry product had been found in a package labeled as mushroom risotto bites. This led to FDA notifying FSIS about the misbranding and undeclared allergen.

While there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them. Instead, the products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Concerned individuals should contact a healthcare provider if they have any worries about illness.
