Football and Ramadan: Three Core Considerations for Players

As the religious month of Ramadan approaches, many Muslim players around the world will be observing the fasting period. With the expected commencement of Ramadan on March 10th, this raises important considerations for footballers who will be fasting while in the midst of their season.

Prof Dr Vincent Gouttebarge, the Chief Medical Officer of FIFPRO, sheds light on the medical aspects surrounding footballers observing Ramadan and emphasizes three fundamental elements to enhance a player’s recovery.

Ramadan, spanning from March 10th to April 9th this year, presents a unique challenge for Muslim players within the football industry. Fasting during the season disrupts the players’ usual rest and recovery routines, prompting the need for improved working conditions to support their physical and mental well-being.

Player unions in countries with Muslim minorities, such as the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) in England, have taken proactive measures by conducting workshops to raise awareness among clubs and coaches. These initiatives aim to provide guidance on supporting fasting players leading up to and during Ramadan.
