First Case of Rabies Confirmed in Larimer County

The first case of rabies in Larimer County this year has been confirmed in Fort Collins. A bat, captured near Drake and Timberline roads by NOCO Humane Animal Protection & Control, tested positive for rabies, as announced by the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment.

Rabies is a serious disease that poses health risks to both humans and domesticated animals. It is primarily transmitted through the saliva of infected animals. Prompt treatment is crucial as untreated infections typically lead to death.

According to Paul Mayer, the medical officer at the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment, it is vital to avoid contact with wildlife and to be informed about the necessary steps in case of contact.

Each year, cases of rabid animals are reported in Larimer County, emphasizing the importance of awareness and precautionary measures.
