Fifth Child Dies from Flu in Tennessee

Nashville, Tenn. — A fifth child has died from the flu in Tennessee this season, state health records show. The Tennessee Department of Health’s influenza report shows a pediatric death was recorded during the week between Feb. 11 through Feb. 17. This flu season began Oct. 1, 2023.

The Tennessee Department of Health is also reporting four open influenza outbreaks in the state during the week of February 11. Those outbreaks are reported in Mid-Cumberland Region, West Region, Memphis/ Shelby County and East Region.

This news comes as Tennessee reports its fifth pediatric influenza death this flu season, highlighting the severity of the current outbreak. The state health records indicate that the flu season, which commenced on October 1, 2023, has already claimed the lives of five children. The Tennessee Department of Health’s influenza report for the week of February 11 also reveals the presence of four ongoing influenza outbreaks in various regions of the state, including the Mid-Cumberland Region, West Region, Memphis/Shelby County, and East Region.
