An ongoing investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revealed a concerning outbreak of Salmonella linked to organic basil sold at Trader Joe’s stores in 29 states and D.C. Consumers are urged not to eat the affected product and to take necessary precautions.
The FDA has issued a warning specifically for the Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil packed in 2.5-oz clamshell packaging, which has been distributed in Alabama, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
Trader Joe’s has taken swift action by voluntarily removing the product from their shelves in the affected states and customers are advised not to consume this basil. Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically manifest within 12 to 72 hours after consumption and may include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.
In response to the outbreak, Infinite Herbs, LLC is cooperating with the FDA investigation and has agreed to a voluntary recall of the affected product. Consumers who have purchased the organic basil from Trader Joe’s in the listed states are advised to discard the product and follow proper cleaning and sanitation procedures to prevent cross-contamination.
If you suspect that you may have consumed the contaminated basil and are experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly. The FDA continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
As of the latest update on April 17, 2024, the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other relevant authorities are actively investigating the multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections associated with the consumption of Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil.
