FDA Reports Alarming New Outbreaks of E. coli and Listeria

Recent updates from the FDA’s CORE Outbreak Investigation Table reveal alarming new outbreaks of E. coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes, while previously reported cyclospora outbreaks remain unsolved. As of October 25, 2024, the table lists eight active outbreaks, with six still under investigation.

The newly identified E. coli O157:H7 outbreak is particularly concerning, linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder beef sandwiches. Reports indicate that 75 individuals have fallen ill, with 22 requiring hospitalization and one death confirmed. The affected individuals are spread across 131 states, raising significant public health concerns. In response, Taylor Farms has issued a recall for their silvered onions supplied to food service customers, although the FDA has yet to confirm if these onions are the source of the outbreak.

In another ongoing E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, there are currently 28 reported cases. The specific food item responsible for this outbreak has not been identified, but the FDA is actively collecting samples, inspecting facilities, and tracing back the source of the contamination.

The situation with Listeria monocytogenes is also developing, with a new outbreak linked to an unidentified product that has sickened at least three people. The FDA is conducting traceback efforts and facility inspections to determine the source of this outbreak.

Additionally, the outbreak of Salmonella Thompson has seen a rise in cases, now totaling 25 sick individuals. The FDA has yet to initiate traceback efforts or sample collection for this outbreak, indicating a potential gap in response measures.

Another Salmonella outbreak, this time involving Salmonella Liverpool, has three reported cases. The FDA has begun traceback investigations and has inspected a facility related to this outbreak, as well as collected samples for testing.

Meanwhile, the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak continues to grow, with 90 patients now reported. The FDA is actively engaged in traceback efforts and facility inspections as part of their investigation.

Lastly, the Diamond Shruumz outbreak remains a serious concern, with the case count steady at 175 sick individuals. This outbreak is now associated with three deaths, and 33 people are still hospitalized as a result of consuming these products. The last update on this outbreak was recorded on October 3, 2024, highlighting the ongoing risks associated with these products.

As investigations continue, health officials urge anyone experiencing symptoms of foodborne illness to seek medical attention promptly. The FDA remains committed to identifying the sources of these outbreaks to prevent further illnesses.

For those affected by food poisoning, legal assistance is available to explore potential claims against responsible parties, including grocery stores, restaurants, and food processors.
