Exploring Ottawa’s Vibrant Culinary Scene: Top Restaurants to Visit

As the culinary scene in Ottawa flourishes, food enthusiasts and travelers alike are discovering a vibrant array of dining options that showcase the creativity and talent of local chefs. Recently, I explored some of the city’s top restaurants, each offering unique flavors and experiences that are sure to impress anyone visiting the nation’s capital.

Starling Restaurant & Bar

Located in the historic York on William (YOW) building within the bustling Byward Market, Starling Restaurant & Bar is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to indulge in contemporary dishes inspired by local ingredients. This dining gem, which also features the Apothecary Cocktail Lounge, boasts a charming rooftop terrace and a street-level patio, providing a delightful ambiance for diners.

During my visit, I was thrilled to enjoy a meal at Starling for the second consecutive year. The restaurant’s menu is a celebration of both timeless classics and innovative personal recipes, all crafted with a focus on locality. The drinks, expertly mixed by the talented bartenders, include delightful concoctions such as the Scarlet Tanager and Elderflower Egret, setting the tone for a memorable dining experience.

We kicked off our meal with a dozen fresh oysters, followed by a Mediterranean platter that featured warm, freshly baked focaccia, marinated roasted peppers, and cerignola olives. The caprese risotto with shrimp was another standout dish that perfectly complemented our flavors. For the main course, we savored the steak frites and the tender beef tenderloin, both cooked to perfection. To round off our meal, we indulged in a rich sticky toffee pudding that left us wanting more.

Métropolitain Brasserie

Just a stone’s throw from the Byward Market, Métropolitain Brasserie is a beloved dining spot that has earned a reputation for its exceptional oyster bar and diverse menu. Open seven days a week, this restaurant offers lunch, dinner, and a delightful brunch on weekends, making it a convenient choice for any occasion.

On this particular evening, we began our dining experience with refreshing cocktails before diving into the small seafood tower, which was more than enough for three to share. This impressive tower included shrimp, oysters, mussels, snow crab, cod croquettes, scallop crudo, and ceviche, showcasing the restaurant’s commitment to fresh seafood. We also enjoyed the burrata toast, which was a delightful addition to our shared plates.

The main course selections did not disappoint either. We opted for the duck confit and the petit steak frites, both of which were rich in flavor and beautifully presented. To satisfy our sweet tooth, we concluded our meal with a decadent flourless chocolate cake that was the perfect ending to a wonderful dining experience.

Cocotte

Situated in the Metcalfe Hotel, Cocotte represents the Gray Collection’s first hotel property outside of Montreal. This stylish restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, just a short walk from the city’s major attractions. Cocotte offers a modern twist on classic dishes, with a menu that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and local flavors.

During my visit to Cocotte, I was impressed by the elegant atmosphere and attentive service. The menu features a variety of options that cater to different tastes, making it an excellent choice for both casual dining and special occasions. I opted for a selection of appetizers to share, including a vibrant salad and a richly flavored soup, both of which showcased the chef’s creativity and skill.

For the main course, I chose a beautifully cooked fish dish accompanied by seasonal vegetables, which was both light and satisfying. The dessert menu at Cocotte is equally enticing, with offerings that range from classic pastries to innovative desserts that highlight local ingredients. I couldn’t resist trying the signature dessert, which was a delightful combination of textures and flavors that perfectly concluded my meal.

As I explored the dining landscape of Ottawa, it was clear that the city is home to a diverse array of culinary experiences. From contemporary restaurants like Starling and Cocotte to the bustling atmosphere of Métropolitain Brasserie, each venue offers a unique perspective on the local food scene. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, Ottawa’s vibrant dining options are sure to satisfy your culinary cravings.
