Expanded Recall of Cucumbers and Salads in Northeast Due to Listeria Risk

In a significant health advisory, a voluntary recall of cucumbers and bagged salads has been expanded in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut due to potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes. This announcement follows an earlier recall initiated by Wiers Farm earlier this month, which involved whole cucumbers and bagged salads dated June 5 and June 6.

Despite the initial products being past their shelf life, the recall has now been broadened to include additional items as part of an ongoing investigation into the contamination. The newly recalled products were packed between July 5 and July 12 and are sold under the brand names Wiers Farm and Freshire Farms.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this precautionary measure is being taken out of an abundance of caution, although no illnesses or consumer complaints have been reported to date. Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis, an infection that may present a variety of symptoms, which can last from days to several weeks depending on the severity of the illness.

Individuals who have consumed the affected products and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues are advised to seek medical attention promptly. The expanded recall comes in the wake of a separate investigation by U.S. health officials into a fatal outbreak of listeria linked to fresh sliced deli meat.
