Europe Needs Twisters Campaign
Researchers from 14 European countries are joining forces to conduct high-density measurements of severe storms, inspired by the movie Twisters. The goal is to enhance early warning systems for severe thunderstorms in the future. The European ‘TIM’ measurement campaign, set to commence in 2026, aims to leverage cutting-edge technologies like weather drones. The initiative underscores the significance of mobile measurement teams getting up close to the storms to gather crucial data.
While drawing parallels to the cinematic portrayal of storms in Twisters, the European researchers emphasize that safety protocols and environmental responsibility are paramount in their campaign. They are actively seeking major donors to support the mobile measurement teams and are engaging with public authorities to garner additional backing.
