EU Antitrust Chief Raises Concerns Over Apple’s Core Technology Fee and Security Warnings

Apple may be facing trouble over its Core Technology Fee and security warnings about alternative app stores. The EU’s antitrust chief, Margrethe Vestager, has indicated that the company’s actions could come under scrutiny. The Core Technology Fee requires developers who want to sell their apps through alternative app stores or their own websites to pay Apple a fee of 50 Euro cents per install per year once the app exceeds a million installs. Concerns have been raised that this fee could make it impossible to offer a popular free app, potentially bankrupting indie developers. Apple has admitted that it doesn’t yet have a solution to this problem. Vestager stated that the EU would be investigating the Core Technology Fee to ensure it does not undermine the benefits of the DMA. Additionally, Apple has been issuing security warnings to discourage iPhone owners from buying apps from third-party app stores. These actions have raised concerns about the company’s practices and may lead to further investigations.
