More enterprises are pivoting their network infrastructure towards wireless technology, particularly 5G, as it outpaces traditional wireline solutions, reports GlobalData.
According to the data and analytics firm, businesses are increasingly prioritizing a mobile-first approach, driven by the widespread availability of 5G and advancements in application programming interfaces (APIs) and security capabilities.
GlobalData’s statement highlights the transformative journey underway, poised to redefine corporate connectivity and offer unmatched flexibility in an increasingly mobile-centric world.
While wireless technology historically served as a backup option to wireline in enterprise networking, the gradual rollout of standalone 5G represents a significant leap forward in bandwidth and programmability for wireless access networks.
Notably, network operators and industry groups are actively innovating to enhance the appeal of wireless options to enterprises and developers.
Research Director for Enterprise Technology and Services at GlobalData, Gary Barton, emphasized, “The ‘wires-free’ message has long resonated with enterprises. WiFi has surpassed Ethernet LAN, and now, we’re witnessing signs that wireless technology could dominate in the WAN space. However, security remains a key barrier to adoption.”
Addressing security concerns, Barton noted that securing data accessed through mobile devices presents a challenge for businesses, with human error remaining the primary source of cybersecurity breaches. Yet, emerging technologies are being introduced to leverage mobile devices as a means to enhance security.
Barton elaborated, “T-Mobile’s reinforcement of its ‘mobile-first’ approach with SSE services, utilizing mobile devices and SIM for identity verification and secure connectivity, is noteworthy. Deploying technologies like SASE, SSE, and SD-WAN over mobile connections validates the potential for wireless to supplant wireline as corporate network requirements evolve.”
Emphasizing the opportunities inherent in embracing mobile devices, Barton concluded, “As we witness the rise of mobile-first generations in the workplace, and with the working population increasingly reliant on their mobile devices, there’s immense potential to enhance productivity and deliver the desired working experience for employees.”
