The Swedish gaming company Embracer Group AB has announced the cancellation of a video game in the popular Deus Ex series after two years of development. This decision is part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs, which will also result in layoffs for a number of employees. The Montreal-based studio Eidos, responsible for the game, will now shift its focus to an original franchise.
Although the canceled Deus Ex project had not been publicly announced, it was scheduled to commence production later this year. The move has sparked concern among gaming enthusiasts and industry insiders, given the series’ critical acclaim and global sales of over 14 million units. Embracer’s acquisition of the Deus Ex series in 2022 added further significance to the cancellation.
Eidos Montreal, in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), confirmed the layoffs of 97 employees, attributing the decision to ‘the global economic context, the challenges of our industry, and the comprehensive restructuring announced by Embracer.’
Embracer Group’s recent actions, including widespread layoffs, game cancellations, and studio closures, come after a period of substantial expansion during the pandemic. These developments reflect the company’s strategic shifts and the broader impact of the global economic landscape on the gaming industry.
The cancellation of the Deus Ex project raises questions about the future direction of the franchise and the implications for both the studio and the gaming community. As of now, Embracer Group has not provided further details or comments regarding the decision.
