The utility company’s investment in advanced technology and infrastructure has proven effective, allowing them to restore power swiftly and minimize outage times for their customers.
According to reports, Duke Energy implemented self-healing technology that played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of Hurricane Debby. This innovative system saved over 12.5 million minutes of total customer outage time and automatically restored power for more than 62,000 customers. Remarkably, this technology is utilized by over 76% of Duke Energy Florida’s clientele, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing the number of customers affected by outages by up to 75%. In many cases, power restoration occurs in less than a minute.
Following Hurricane Debby, Duke Energy was able to restore power to 93% of its customers within just 24 hours. This rapid response was a direct result of the company’s ongoing commitment to grid improvements and technological advancements. The utility’s self-healing technology has previously proven invaluable during other significant storms, including hurricanes Ian, Nicole, and Idalia, collectively saving more than 200 million outage minutes for customers.
In addition to the self-healing technology, Duke Energy is proactively working to enhance its infrastructure further. The company plans to install underground cables in areas prone to outages, addressing vulnerabilities in the electric grid. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes extensive maintenance and upgrades to existing distribution lines and transmission systems.
Over the past three years, Duke Energy has completed maintenance trimming on more than 4,000 miles of distribution lines, alongside 600 miles of planned work on the transmission side. Moreover, the utility has hardened over 40,000 poles through its Storm Protection Plan, reinforcing the grid against adverse weather conditions.
Duke Energy’s commitment to reliability extends beyond immediate storm response. The company is actively expanding the capacity of its electric grid by constructing new substations, upgrading existing ones, and installing larger circuits. To date, the optimization of 12 substations has been completed, with another 50 currently in progress across the state of Florida.
