DJI Introduces SDR Transmission System for Filmmakers

DJI has introduced a new video transmission system called SDR Transmission, aimed at making advanced software-defined radio (SDR) technology more accessible to small- and medium-sized film crews. This system offers an affordable Wi-Fi-based wireless video solution with an impressive operating range and low latency of just 35 milliseconds.

The DJI SDR Transmission system boasts features such as a complete receiver/transmitter system, SDR tri-bandwidth technology, and support for up to 1080p60 resolution. With a range of up to 1.9 miles, this system is designed to provide enhanced stability, strong interference resistance, and robust penetration capabilities for filmmakers.

One of the key highlights of the DJI SDR Transmission system is its compatibility with Ronin stabilizers, allowing for seamless integration into existing filmmaking setups. It offers HDMI, SDI, and USB-C connections, along with a high bit rate of up to 20 Mb/s, ensuring high-quality video transmission.

According to Paul Pan, Senior Product Line Manager at DJI, the company aims to provide a comprehensive ecosystem of drones, cameras, and creator tools for professional filmmakers and content creators. The DJI SDR Transmission system is part of this initiative, offering film and television-level image transmission quality at a more accessible price point.

With a claimed operating range of 3 kilometers (1.8 miles), the DJI SDR Transmission system is designed to deliver stable video transmissions even in challenging shooting environments. Filmmakers can expect to receive 1080p/60fps live feeds with a bitrate of up to 20 Mbps and minimal latency, ensuring a smooth viewing experience.

The system supports diverse monitoring methods, allowing for simultaneous output of three SDR signals and two Wi-Fi signals. Filmmakers can choose to output to monitors via SDI/HDMI, connect to smartphones/tablets directly via Wi-Fi, or use a USB-C cable for monitoring purposes. In broadcast mode, the system can connect to unlimited receivers, providing a high-quality monitoring experience for film crews.
