‘Devil Comet’ 12P/Pons-Brooks to Make Visible Appearance Near Earth This Spring

Astronomy enthusiasts are in for a treat as the ‘Devil Comet’ 12P/Pons-Brooks is set to make a visible appearance as it passes close to Earth this spring. Discovered in 1812, this massive comet, with a diameter of around 30km, takes 70 years to complete its orbit around the sun. The last time it came close to Earth was in 1954, and now, it is expected to grace our skies once again.

Renowned for its striking ‘flaring’ episodes, the comet has garnered the nickname ‘Devil Comet’ due to its sudden bursts of brightness, at times resembling devil horns. Scientists have observed an increase in its brightness as it approaches Earth, raising hopes that it will be visible to the naked eye.

The UK Space Agency recently shared insights on this celestial event, noting that Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is anticipated to reappear in March. With its history of sudden flaring, the comet is expected to captivate stargazers as it journeys through the inner Solar System.
