Dengue Fever Surges in Thailand with Over 8,000 Cases in January 2024

Dengue fever is posing a significant threat in Thailand, with over 8,000 reported cases in January 2024. The Disease Control Department (DCD) of Thailand has issued a warning, urging the public to take precautions against mosquito bites to prevent the spread of the disease.

Dr. Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn, the director-general of DCD, revealed that the number of dengue cases in January 2024 surged by 91.25% compared to the same period in 2023, with 8,197 confirmed cases. Tragically, 13 individuals have succumbed to the virus so far this year.

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. The symptoms include high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and swollen glands.

Dr. Thongchai emphasized that the majority of the affected individuals in 2024 were children between the ages of five and 14. The southern and central provinces of Thailand reported the highest number of cases, with the oldest patient being 65 years old.

As a preventive measure, Dr. Thongchai urged all hospitals treating dengue fever patients to distribute anti-mosquito cream or spray to other patients to shield them from the virus. Additionally, he advised individuals in close proximity to dengue patients to take necessary precautions and seek medical attention promptly if they experience a high fever.
