De Anza College Faculty and Students Discuss Pros and Cons of AI Tools

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have become a common topic of discussion among faculty and students at De Anza College. While some view AI tools as a valuable resource for enhancing productivity and learning, others express concerns about the potential drawbacks of their misuse.

One popular AI tool mentioned by faculty members is ChatGPT, a software capable of generating full-length essays in seconds. Additionally, Grammarly, a widely used tool for editing and suggesting corrections in writing, is highlighted as a common choice among students. However, English professor Chesa Caparas warns that overreliance on such tools can lead to a robotic writing style and may hinder students’ foundational writing skills.

English professor Mary Cudahy emphasizes the importance of using AI tools cautiously and encourages students to conduct thorough research to avoid misinformation. Cudahy suggests that educators should adapt their teaching methods to incorporate assignments that challenge students beyond the capabilities of AI tools.

Despite the potential benefits of AI tools, some students like Grace Arenas opt not to use them due to concerns about academic integrity and faculty restrictions on their use. While AI tools offer convenience and efficiency, both faculty and students acknowledge the necessity of using them responsibly to maximize their educational value.
