Curiosity Rover Surpasses 4,400 Days on Mars Despite Wheel Damage

Nasa’s Curiosity rover, an emblem of space exploration, has been tirelessly navigating the Martian landscape for over 4,400 Earth days since its landing in Gale Crater in 2012. This region is believed to be the remnant of an ancient lake, and during its mission, Curiosity has covered an impressive distance of more than 32 kilometers.

Despite the harsh conditions on Mars that have taken a toll on its wheels, Curiosity continues to function effectively. Recent observations reveal significant wear and tear, particularly on the rover’s middle right wheel, which has developed large potholes. These images, captured by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera on February 5, 2024, showcase the extent of the damage.

The six wheels of Curiosity, each 50 cm in diameter and crafted from solid aluminum, have faced considerable challenges due to the rocky terrain of Mars.
