Cruise Faces Major Setback After Losing Robotaxi License in California

Cruise, the autonomous vehicle technology startup owned by General Motors, is facing a major setback after an independent report revealed serious lapses in judgment and leadership, resulting in the loss of its robotaxi license in California. The report, released on Thursday, attributed the loss to a ‘self-inflicted wound’ caused by poor leadership and a confrontational approach towards regulators.

The incident in question occurred on October 2 in San Francisco when a hit-and-run driver struck a pedestrian, causing her to be launched into the path of a Cruise robotaxi, which subsequently dragged her underneath the car. The report highlighted that crucial information about the post-collision dragging was not fully disclosed to regulators or the media, leading to serious injuries and a lack of transparency.

The investigation conducted by law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan found that Cruise leaders and employees did not intentionally deceive or mislead regulators. Instead, it pointed to a combination of technical difficulties, poor decision-making, and a fundamental misunderstanding of regulatory requirements as the root causes of the oversight.

One concerning revelation from the report was that some Cruise employees were aware of the dragging incident but failed to share this information with colleagues responsible for explaining the accident to regulators.
