In a recent post-match interview, Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy expressed his dissatisfaction regarding a crucial moment in their Campeones Cup match against Club América. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the Crew ultimately fell short in the penalty shootout, losing 5-4. The pivotal moment came when Malte Amundsen missed a penalty kick, a decision that has sparked controversy.
Nancy raised concerns about the officiating during the penalty attempt, specifically pointing out that goalkeeper Luis Angel Malagón of Club América was not positioned correctly on the goal line. According to Nancy, the referee had previously enforced rules regarding the placement of the ball and the positioning of players, but failed to uphold these standards during the penalty kick.
“The referee did a good job during the PK to tell the players, you have to put the ball on the line, the goalkeepers don’t have the right to move,” Nancy stated. He continued, noting the referee’s contradictory stance: “But when Malte took the PK, the goalkeeper was not on the line. And the referee said that, sorry, I’m laughing because the referee said that it didn’t affect the shot.” This inconsistency has left Nancy frustrated, as he believes that the goalkeeper’s movement should have warranted a retake of the penalty.
Amundsen’s shot ultimately struck the crossbar and bounced away, resulting in a missed opportunity for the Crew. According to the competition rules, a penalty kick should only be retaken if the goalkeeper’s actions clearly impact the kicker’s attempt. However, Nancy argued that the referee’s decision to allow the kick to stand was questionable.
Despite the disappointment of the match, Nancy emphasized the importance of learning from such experiences. He recalled previous lessons learned from both victories and defeats, stating, “We lost the game. I told them when we won the MLS Cup, we learned from that. And we lost the Concacaf Champions Cup final in Pachuca. We also learned from that. So at the end of the day, the fact that we win or we lose, we learn.” He expressed pride in his team’s performance and resilience, encouraging them to move forward positively.
Looking ahead, the Columbus Crew will face D.C. United on Saturday night at Audi Field before returning home to host Inter Miami next Wednesday. Currently, the Crew holds a strong position in the Eastern Conference, sitting in third place with 56 points after 29 matches. This puts them in contention for the Supporters’ Shield, with the possibility of competing against Inter Miami for the title.
Mathematically, the Crew remains one of the three teams capable of challenging Inter Miami for the Supporters’ Shield. Miami, however, could secure the title by accumulating eight points from their final four games. A loss against Columbus, paired with other favorable results, could open the door for the Crew to claim the shield.
The Columbus Crew has had a successful season thus far, having previously secured the 2023 MLS Cup and the 2024 Leagues Cup. With the playoffs approaching, the team is focused on maintaining their strong form and learning from every match as they strive for further success in the league.
