Cobra Kai’s Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, known for their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence in the 1984 hit film The Karate Kid, have recently opened up about their journey to becoming friends as adults. Despite portraying on-screen rivals, the actors had lost touch for many years until a significant event brought them back together.

Following the release of The Karate Kid, Macchio and Zabka went their separate ways due to living on opposite coasts and the busyness of life. However, their reunion occurred at the funeral of their former co-star, Pat Morita, who played Mr. Miyagi in the film, in 2005.

Reflecting on the emotional reunion, Macchio shared, ‘I remember seeing Billy at the memorial service in Vegas, and I instantly had this emotional feeling. It was a comfort seeing him there. From that point on, our adult friendship started to happen, and it was quite meaningful.’

Zabka also expressed the significance of the event, stating, ‘Pat meant a lot to both of us individually, and Pat and I were dear friends. When he passed, it was super sad. We felt the need to be there to pay our respects.’

The bond that formed between Macchio and Zabka was further solidified by their shared experiences and memories of Morita. Zabka recalled the support he felt for Macchio during a poignant moment at the funeral, emphasizing the depth of their connection.

In his memoir, Macchio described the impact of reuniting with Zabka, noting, ‘For the first time, after so many years of absence, I saw Billy from another perspective. It felt different. We were on the same side of the mat.’

Both actors acknowledge the role that their on-screen mentor, Mr. Miyagi, played in bringing them together. Morita’s portrayal of the wise and inspirational karate coach resonated with Macchio and Zabka, ultimately serving as a catalyst for their renewed friendship.
