Club América president Santiago Baños has expressed interest in the possibility of playing Liga MX home games in the United States while their Estadio Azteca undergoes renovations for the 2026 World Cup. The team is set to share Mexico City’s Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes with crosstown rivals Cruz Azul for the 2024-25 season, but is also exploring the option of playing home games both in Mexico and north of the border.

Baños mentioned a recent antitrust lawsuit filed against U.S. Soccer and FIFA regarding the policy of not allowing a country to host league matches involving teams from other countries. This lawsuit, initiated by New York’s Relevent Sports, gained traction after the Supreme Court allowed it to proceed in April. FIFA has since withdrawn from the case and announced plans to form a panel to consider changes to rules governing ‘out-of-territory’ matches.

In light of these developments, Baños stated, ‘We’re not closed off to viewing the possibility of playing home games in the United States. It would be impressive to see América playing at home there, in any of the states where we have many followers.’

LaLiga president Javier Tebas also expressed optimism about playing games in the U.S., suggesting that official matches could take place from the 2025-26 season onwards. Tebas highlighted the importance of expanding LaLiga’s presence in the North American market, which is the second-largest market for the league after Spain. He emphasized the need for innovation to stay competitive against other emerging leagues.

Following their match against Cruz Azul at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, Club América will conclude the championship series at home in the Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
