Residents of Cleveland are buzzing with excitement as the approval for the design of the Cavs Downtown Training Facility has been given the green light by the Cleveland Planning Commission. This development marks a significant step in the rejuvenation of the Cuyahoga Riverfront area.
Back in December 2022, Bedrock unveiled plans for a massive $3.5 billion neighborhood project in the Flats South region along the Cuyahoga River. This announcement sparked hope among locals for increased access to the riverfront, which is currently dominated by parking lots.
Fast forward to a recent Cleveland Planning Commission meeting, where the vision outlined in the Cuyahoga Riverfront Master Plan moved closer to becoming a reality. The approval of the schematic design for the Cavs/Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center signifies the beginning of construction along the northern edge of the river.
Aside from the excitement of having a new clinic facility and a Cavs training center in a more accessible location compared to distant suburbs like Independence or Berea, the focus during the meeting was on the potential impact of the facility on the surrounding land.
CPC members and stakeholders expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of activating the riverfront space, transforming it from a sea of unused car storage to a vibrant area with people enjoying the scenic views along the river’s edge.
Chair of the Cleveland Planning Commission, Lilian Kuri, emphasized the importance of activating this space, highlighting the shift towards a more dynamic and engaging environment for residents and visitors alike.
