Cinco de Mayo: A Celebration of Mexican Heritage in the U.S.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is a widely celebrated holiday with festivities that often include tacos, tequila, and margarita specials. However, there is a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day, when in fact it commemorates Mexico’s victory over France 50 years after gaining independence. Mexico’s actual Independence Day is celebrated on September 16.

Despite its origins, Cinco de Mayo has become a significant cultural celebration in America, particularly among Mexican Americans. President Biden highlighted the day as an opportunity to honor the resilience, culture, and heritage of generations of Mexican Americans.

According to a survey conducted by Numerator, 59% of those celebrating Cinco de Mayo planned to purchase alcohol for the occasion, surpassing the percentages for New Year’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Day. This indicates a strong association of the holiday with festive gatherings and social activities.

As for the history of Cinco de Mayo, it commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, where Mexican troops achieved a significant victory over French forces. The day is mainly celebrated in the Mexican state of Puebla, where the battle took place, and is known as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla.

Cinco de Mayo gained popularity in the U.S. during the 1960s as Mexican American activists sought to raise awareness of their heritage. Over time, corporations and beer companies capitalized on the holiday to target the growing Hispanic market. Today, Cinco de Mayo is marked by various events and promotions across the country.

One notable tradition around Cinco de Mayo is the hosting of a pay-per-view boxing match featuring prominent Mexican or Mexican American boxers. Additionally, cities throughout the U.S. organize parades, festivals, and special events to commemorate the day. Even sports teams like the Albuquerque Isotopes join in the celebrations by hosting themed games.
