Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ Set for Imax 70mm Re-Release in Honor of 10th Anniversary

Christopher Nolan’s iconic sci-fi epic ‘Interstellar’ is set to make a grand return to theaters in honor of its 10th anniversary. The film, which originally grossed an impressive $731 million globally upon its release in 2014, will be re-released in Imax 70mm format this fall.

The re-release was announced by Paramount Pictures during the CinemaCon exhibition industry conference, with the film scheduled to hit theaters on Sept. 27, 2024. Alongside the Imax prints, ‘Interstellar’ will also be screened in digital format, a collaborative effort between Paramount and Warner Bros., the co-producer of the movie.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, ‘Interstellar’ features a star-studded cast including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Matt Damon. The story is set in a dystopian future where a team of astronauts embarks on a mission to find a new habitable planet for humanity.

Christopher Nolan, known for his dedication to the art of filmmaking, shot ‘Interstellar’ using a combination of 35mm anamorphic film and 65mm Imax. The decision to release the movie in film formats was a significant undertaking at the time due to the industry’s shift towards digital projectors. Nolan has been a vocal advocate for the cinematic experience and has continued to champion the use of Imax technology.

This re-release follows Nolan’s recent success with ‘Oppenheimer,’ a historical epic that earned him the best director award at the Oscars this year. ‘Oppenheimer’ also secured the best picture accolade and grossed nearly $1 billion, further solidifying Nolan’s position as one of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers. Additionally, Nolan’s action thriller ‘Tenet’ has also been re-released in theaters, showcasing the enduring appeal of his work.

‘Interstellar’ holds a special place in the hearts of moviegoers, and the opportunity to experience the film in Imax 70mm is sure to reignite the awe and wonder it originally inspired. As audiences gear up to revisit this cinematic masterpiece, the re-release of ‘Interstellar’ promises to be a captivating journey back to the far reaches of space and time.
