Chinese Satellite Company Achieves Groundbreaking Feat in Intersatellite Communication

A Chinese commercial satellite company has achieved a groundbreaking feat in the field of intersatellite communication. Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co Ltd (CGSTL) has successfully conducted laser communications between two Jilin-1 satellites in orbit, achieving an astounding speed of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps). This remarkable achievement marks a significant advancement in the realm of satellite technology.

The successful data transmission between the two satellites resulted in the high-speed download of remote sensing images to the ground, setting a new precedent for the transmission of high-definition intersatellite images at such a rapid pace. The company’s extensive efforts in satellite deployment and technology verifications have paved the way for this remarkable accomplishment.

CGSTL has played a pivotal role in the deployment of over 100 Jilin-1 satellites, forming a robust commercial constellation in orbit. Since 2021, the company has been actively engaged in conducting crucial technology verifications for laser communications between these satellites, culminating in this groundbreaking achievement.

Intersatellite laser communications hold immense potential in revolutionizing information interconnection between satellites, thereby enhancing the speed of data exchange. This development is particularly crucial for the establishment of large-scale satellite networks, signifying a significant leap forward in satellite communication technology.

Xing Sirui, a technical personnel at CGSTL, emphasized the importance of intersatellite laser communications in facilitating seamless information exchange between satellites, underscoring its pivotal role in advancing satellite networking capabilities.

Prior to this remarkable feat, the company had already achieved laser communications between satellites at a speed of 10 Gbps, in addition to establishing laser communications between satellites and ground stations. These accomplishments underscore the company’s unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of satellite communication technology.

CGSTL’s successful realization of ultra-high-speed intersatellite laser communications represents a significant milestone in the field of satellite technology, positioning China as a trailblazer in this domain. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the company’s relentless pursuit of innovation and technological advancement in the realm of satellite communication.
