Chiefs Player BJ Thompson Recovering After Seizure and Cardiac Arrest Scare

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman BJ Thompson is recovering well after a scary incident that occurred during a team meeting. Thompson suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest, but thanks to quick action from his teammates and medical staff, he is now awake and responsive.

Thompson’s agent reported that he is alert and headed in the right direction after being heavily sedated and on a ventilator overnight at a local hospital. Chiefs vice president of sports medicine, Rick Burkholder, praised the team’s response to the emergency situation, highlighting the importance of regularly practicing emergency action plans.

During the incident, kicker Harrison Butker alerted the medical staff when Thompson experienced the seizure. CPR was performed on Thompson, and a defibrillator was used once he went into cardiac arrest. Burkholder commended everyone involved in handling the crisis, including players, security staff, coaches, and other team members.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed gratitude for the support and quick response Thompson received, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for such situations. The team cancelled all activities scheduled for the day of the incident to focus on Thompson’s well-being.

Thompson, a fifth-round pick in 2023, had appeared in one game during his rookie season. The Chiefs, as the reigning Super Bowl champions, are currently in Phase 3 of their voluntary offseason program, with mandatory minicamp set to begin soon.
