Charles Osgood, Veteran CBS Newsman and ‘Sunday Morning’ Host, Dies at 91

Charles Osgood, the veteran CBS newsman and iconic host of “Sunday Morning,” passed away at the age of 91 in his New Jersey home. The award-winning journalist, known for his 22-year tenure as the anchor of “CBS Sunday Morning” and as the host of the long-running radio program “The Osgood File,” succumbed to dementia, as confirmed by his family.

Osgood, a prolific news writer, poet, and author, dedicated 45 years to CBS News before his retirement in September 2016. His stint as the anchor of “CBS Sunday Morning” from 1994 saw the show achieve its highest ratings in three decades and clinch the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Morning Program on three occasions.

Upon his retirement at the age of 84, Osgood expressed his joy in being part of the show, highlighting the privilege of introducing remarkable storytellers, producers, and writers who contributed to the show’s success. He reminisced about his fulfilling journey, citing it as a great run.

Throughout his career, Osgood conducted interviews with notable figures such as chef Julia Child, artist Keith Haring, painter Andrew Wyeth, sculptor Louise Nevelson, and singer-songwriter Sting. His passion for poetry and music was evident in his work, often showcasing his playful prose and performing Christmas carols on the piano during holiday broadcasts.

Regarded as CBS News’ poet-in-residence, Osgood was hailed as “one of the last great broadcast writers” by Charles Kuralt, his predecessor as the host of the Sunday morning magazine program. Beyond his writing prowess, Osgood was a multi-talented musician, proficient in playing the piano, organ, banjo, and violin, as well as composing and writing lyrics.

His diverse talents extended beyond CBS, with occasional performances alongside professional orchestras like The New York Pop.
