Chandipura Virus Suspected in Deaths of Children in Northern India

A virus belonging to the rabies family and transmitted through vectors like sandflies and mosquitoes has been suspected to be the reason behind the deaths of more than 10 children, in the northern part of India, in the past few days. The Chandipura virus, which was discovered in Maharashtra’s Chandipura, is apparently found mostly in the Central part of India. It is likely to affect children between the ages of 0 to 14, according to doctors.

Infected sandflies can transmit the Chandipura virus to humans through biting. These sandflies are tiny with a hairy body and wings, active at night, causing redness and swelling upon biting. They are mostly found in warm and humid climates, particularly during and after the monsoon season when their population is high. The virus can also be transmitted through mosquito bites and cow dung storage acting as a feed for sandfly larvae.

The symptoms of Chandipura virus, as per the National Institute of Health, include sudden high fever with headache, seizures, confusion, disorientation, drowsiness, diarrhea, vomiting, and brain inflammation. Health officials in Gujarat, where cases were reported, have highlighted brain inflammation as a symptom. Experts warn that symptoms can progress rapidly within 12 to 24 hours, with death occurring within 48 hours.

Dr. Sudheer Kumar, Senior Consultant Neurologist of the Apollo Group of Hospitals, emphasized the importance of hospitalizing patients as soon as symptoms appear. Immediate supportive treatments such as IV fluids and medication for convulsion control should be administered promptly to manage the infection.

Parents and caregivers are advised to be vigilant, especially in regions where the Chandipura virus is prevalent, to protect children from potential exposure. Understanding the transmission methods and symptoms of the virus can help in early detection and treatment, ultimately safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable individuals.
