The Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team has had a remarkable season, culminating in a standout performance at the Section III state qualifying meet at SRC Arena. Led by Susie Pittman, the team broke four school records and achieved 12 season-best performances, leaving a lasting mark on the school’s athletic history.
Pittman’s exceptional talent was on full display as she shattered three school records and emerged victorious in the pole vault event. Her remarkable leap of 10 feet 6 inches secured her first-team All-Central New York honors. Pittman’s dominance was evident as she cleared each height on her first attempt, establishing herself as the sole vaulter to exceed 10 feet. This marked the fourth occasion this season that Pittman set a new pole vault record, surpassing the previous mark of 9’6″, which had endured for two decades.
Not content with just excelling in the pole vault, Pittman also made her mark in the 400 meters, breaking a 13-year-old school record with a time of 1:00.42 in the opening leg of the Lakers’ 4×400 meter relay. Her outstanding performance, combined with the impressive efforts of Reid McMurtrie, Izzy Stromer-Galley, and Meghan Mehlbaum, resulted in a new school record time of 4:07.03, showcasing the team’s collective prowess.
Maddy Rothfeld also etched her name in the record books with a remarkable display in the weight throw. Her throw of 42’1″ marked a significant improvement over her previous record and secured her third place in the section, narrowly missing out on a trip to the state meet. Rothfeld’s exceptional season continued in the shot put, where she reached the finals and finished fifth, demonstrating her consistent excellence throughout the season.
Despite narrowly missing out on a trip to the state meet in some events, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team’s outstanding performances at the state qualifying meet have solidified their status as a force to be reckoned with in high school sports. Their record-breaking achievements and remarkable individual performances serve as a testament to their dedication and talent, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations of athletes at Cazenovia High School.
