Saint Thomas Becket, a revered figure, met his tragic fate in Canterbury’s cathedral in 1170 at the hands of four knights who believed they were carrying out the king’s wishes. This year’s pageant, marking the 850th anniversary of Henry’s pilgrimage to Canterbury, will reenact the king’s barefoot march to the saint’s tomb as a gesture of penance for his involvement in Becket’s murder.

The procession will kick off at Westgate Towers, proceed to the Buttermarket, and conclude at the cathedral grounds. An intriguing aspect of the event will be the king’s effigy offering an official apology within the cathedral precincts, adding a solemn touch to the festivities.
