Brighton Author Raises Concerns About ADHD Medication Shortage

A Brighton author and comedian, Lorelei Mathias, has raised concerns about the shortage of medication for ADHD patients, calling for an overhaul of the system. The shortage, attributed to increased global demand and manufacturing issues, has left patients struggling to access their necessary medication.

The Department for Health and Social Care acknowledged the shortages, which began in 2023, and assured that measures were being taken to address the issue. However, Ms. Mathias expressed frustration, likening the struggle to a Herculean task. She emphasized the toll it takes on individuals, describing it as ‘utterly exhausting.’

ADHD symptoms, including fidgeting, distraction, impulsivity, and difficulty with prioritizing and organizing, were highlighted by Ms. Mathias. She emphasized the impact of medication shortages on individuals, leading to increased mistakes and challenging situations.

CEO of ADHD UK, Henry Shelford, criticized the government’s response to the shortage, stating that individuals with ADHD are being let down. He highlighted the extensive waiting lists for both adults and children seeking treatment.

The health department assured that efforts were being made to collaborate with the pharmaceutical industry to resolve the shortages and provide guidance to healthcare professionals.

As the call for an overhaul of the system gains momentum, it is evident that the ADHD medication shortage has had a significant impact on patients, prompting concerns and demands for swift and effective solutions.
