Beloved ‘Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.’ Actress Elizabeth MacRae Halsey Passes Away at 88

Beloved Hollywood actress, Elizabeth MacRae Halsey, known for her iconic role as Lou-Ann Poovie in the television sitcom ‘Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,’ has passed away at the age of 88. Her portrayal of the girlfriend of Jim Nabors’ character brought her fame and adoration from television fans.

Elizabeth, also known as Betsy MacRae, had a successful acting career that spanned decades, appearing in popular shows like ‘Gunsmoke,’ ‘Bonanza,’ ‘Dr. Kildare,’ ‘Route 66,’ ‘I Dream of Jeannie,’ ‘The Fugitive,’ and ‘The Andy Griffith Show.’

She was remembered fondly by her nephew, Jim MacRae, who described her as bright, articulate, and still receiving fan mail at the time of her passing. Elizabeth passed away peacefully at Highland House Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Fayetteville.

Elizabeth’s contributions to the entertainment industry were recognized when she was inducted into the Fayetteville Performing Arts Hall of Fame in 2023. Mayon Weeks, who inducted her, praised Elizabeth’s ‘X factor’ and her ability to light up the room with her presence.

Elizabeth MacRae Halsey, born as Elizabeth Hendon MacRae, grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in a loving family. She enjoyed spending time with friends and watching movies at the local theater, where she found inspiration from classic film stars.

After graduating from Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland, Elizabeth pursued her passion for acting and eventually made a name for herself in Hollywood. Her talent and charm endeared her to audiences, making her a treasured member of the Fayetteville community.
