Bayer’s Monsanto ordered to pay over $2.2 billion in Roundup cancer case

Bayer AG’s Monsanto unit has been ordered by a Pennsylvania jury to pay over $2.2 billion to a former Roundup user who claims his cancer was caused by the weed killer. This verdict marks one of the largest trial losses for Bayer in the five years of litigation over the herbicide.

The plaintiff was awarded $250 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages by jurors in state court in Philadelphia. The plaintiff alleged that years of using Roundup at work and at home led to his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

While Monsanto had previously won several trials, it has recently faced a series of jury verdicts concluding that Roundup contains carcinogens. In November, a $1.5 billion verdict was handed down in Missouri to three former users of the herbicide.

Bayer expressed disagreement with the jury’s adverse verdict, citing conflicting scientific evidence and worldwide regulatory and scientific assessments. The company stated that it intends to appeal the verdict and seek to have the excessive damage award eliminated or reduced.
