Bangor, Maine – The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter is making a significant impact in preventing homelessness through its Intake and Diversion program. Maria Horodeski, the shelter’s Intake & Diversion Coordinator, emphasized the importance of taking small steps to build a stronger foundation.
While the primary mission of the shelter is to provide emergency shelter, the Intake and Diversion program focuses on offering various housing options to individuals who are experiencing homelessness or on the verge of becoming homeless. Horodeski explained that the program involves sitting down with individuals, brainstorming, and problem-solving to explore alternative housing options. Often, individuals have options available to them, but feelings of shame and guilt may hinder them from considering those options.
Horodeski, who is 14 years in recovery and has experienced homelessness herself, understands the challenges faced by the individuals in the program. She aims to provide positive reinforcement and empowerment to those going through difficult times, offering them hope and support to make positive changes in their lives.
Her personal experience allows her to connect with individuals and guide them through the transition. She expressed her enthusiasm for her job, highlighting a recent conversation with an individual who was struggling but ultimately chose not to relapse. Horodeski’s dedication to her role is evident as she encourages individuals to take pride in the steps they are taking to better themselves.
