Avian Influenza Outbreak Sparks Fear in California

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has sparked fear in California as it wreaks havoc on the bird population. This highly contagious viral disease has caused an outbreak of unprecedented scale, leading to concerns about its impact on humans and pets. With poultry farms under lockdown and wild birds falling from the sky, the avian flu has raised anxieties across the state.

Avian flu is a respiratory disease primarily affecting birds but can also infect humans. The flu season traditionally begins each October as migratory birds shed infected droppings or saliva while leaving cool areas of the Northern Hemisphere.

What is the Avian flu outbreak in California?

Avian flu, also known as avian influenza, is a respiratory condition caused by infection with a specific type of influenza virus. Domestic poultry, including guinea hens, ducks, geese, and chickens, are commonly affected by these influenza viruses. While the chance of human infection is low, cases of avian flu viruses have been reported, particularly in individuals who have frequent contact with poultry or wild birds.

How does Avian Influenza spread to humans?

Human infections with the avian flu virus can range from mild cases with no symptoms to severe and fatal illnesses. According to the CDC, the Asian lineage H7N9 and highly pathogenic avian influenza Asian lineage H5N1 viruses have been responsible for most human illnesses from bird flu viruses worldwide to date. Infected birds release the bird flu virus through their saliva, mucus, and feces, posing a risk of human exposure through inhalation of the virus in the air or contact with contaminated surfaces.
