In a strategic move ahead of their three-game series against the Oakland Athletics, the Houston Astros have added veteran utilityman Aledmys Díaz to their major league roster. This decision marks a significant reunion for Díaz, who previously played for the Astros from 2019 to 2022.
Prior to the series opener against the A’s, the Astros made a corresponding roster adjustment by optioning infielder Grae Kessinger to Triple-A Sugar Land. Additionally, infielder David Hensley was designated for assignment to clear a spot for Díaz on the 40-man roster.
Díaz’s return comes after he signed a minor-league deal with the Astros earlier this month, following his release from the Oakland A’s. In his brief stint with Houston’s rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate, he showcased his skills by going 5-for-15 in just four games.
“It’s a great feeling,” Díaz expressed on Monday afternoon. “I basically feel like I never left. Especially knowing the boys and manager Joe Espada, being here for four years, so many memories. So I feel like normal to be back in this clubhouse.” His excitement was palpable as he reconnected with former teammates on the field before the game.
The Astros’ decision to re-sign Díaz underscores his value as a versatile player who can contribute in multiple positions. Throughout his previous tenure with the team, he played all four infield positions and even took on roles in the corner outfield spots. His performance during that time included a 101 OPS-plus across 262 regular-season games, along with participation in four postseason runs.

He has expressed his willingness to adapt to whatever role the team needs, whether that involves playing different positions or pinch-hitting in crucial moments. “I’m open to play every position, pinch-hit late in the game,” Díaz stated. “Whatever the team needs from me, I’m going to be ready for that.”
Díaz’s journey took an unexpected turn when he signed a two-year, $14.5 million contract with the A’s before the 2023 season. However, his time with Oakland was marred by injuries, limiting him to just 12 games this season after appearing in 109 games in 2023, where he posted an adjusted OPS that was 26% below the MLB average.
Astros manager Joe Espada highlighted the importance of Díaz’s return, emphasizing the value of his presence and leadership in the clubhouse. “I really like the bat, his versatility,” Espada noted. “I think our hitting coaches saw some things in him that I think we can get him back to those ’21, ’22 levels of his performance.” Díaz was immediately integrated into the lineup, starting at first base for the series opener against Oakland.
