Ashanti recently opened up about the details of Nelly’s proposal and their rekindled relationship, shedding light on their unexpected journey back to each other. In an exclusive interview with ET’s Deidre Behar, Ashanti expressed her surprise at where they are today, especially considering their past breakup.

Reflecting on their history, Ashanti shared, “Never in a million years did I think we would be here. Ten years ago, maybe yes, but after our breakup, I didn’t even think we’d ever have a conversation again.” She described how she typically closes off after a breakup, moving on and shutting that chapter of her life.

However, fate had other plans as the former couple crossed paths in 2021 at Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s Verzuz battle, leading to Nelly reaching out to Ashanti with the help of DJ City. Fast forward three years, and Ashanti finds herself engaged and discussing her pregnancy during a maternity photoshoot with photographer Derek Blanks.

Recalling the initial phone calls with Nelly, Ashanti shared, “I had to really, like, be real with myself, like, do I have feel…”
