Arapahoe Basin Ski Area Acquired by Alterra Mountain Co.

The iconic Arapahoe Basin ski area in Colorado is undergoing a major change as it has been acquired by Alterra Mountain Co., one of the nation’s biggest ski resort operators. This acquisition marks a significant milestone for the 1,428-acre ski area, known as The Legend.

Alterra Mountain Co. has announced that Alan Henceroth, the current chief operating officer of Arapahoe Basin with 36 years of experience, will continue to lead the ski area. The acquisition comes with capital improvement plans, including expanded parking and snowmaking, demonstrating Alterra’s commitment to enhancing the facilities at Arapahoe Basin.

According to Henceroth, Arapahoe Basin holds a special place in the hearts of Colorado skiers and riders, and the team is dedicated to preserving the unique culture that attracts visitors. The ski area has been a part of the Ikon Pass community since 2019, and there are no immediate changes planned for the pass for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.

Established in 1946, Arapahoe Basin becomes the 18th year-round mountain destination under the ownership of Alterra Mountain Co. The company’s expansion began in 2017 when it was formed through the acquisition of struggling Intrawest Corp. Since then, Alterra has added several prominent ski resorts to its portfolio and launched the Ikon Pass to compete with Vail Resorts’ Epic Pass.

The acquisition of Arapahoe Basin further solidifies Alterra Mountain Co.’s position in the ski industry, offering skiers and riders more options and experiences across its growing network of mountain destinations.
