Apple’s Macintosh computer is celebrating its 40th anniversary on January 24, and despite its age, it continues to dominate the market. In the last reported sales year, Macintosh sales dipped below $30 billion, marking a more than 25 percent drop from the previous year’s $40 billion. However, the Mac has evolved to become slimmer, faster, and more long-lasting before needing a recharge, defying the conventional notion of aging.
Steven Levy, a technology journalist, shared his personal connection with the Mac, recalling a prelaunch preview he had before its official release in January 1984. Levy even authored a book titled ‘Insanely Great,’ where he hailed the Mac as ‘the computer that changed everything.’ The Mac revolutionized how people interact with computers, paving the way for a new era of user-friendly technology and a focus on design that has had a lasting impact.
Despite initially occupying only a small portion of the market, the Mac has grown to become a significant player in PC sales. Apple claims that its Macbook Air is the world’s best-selling computer model, and a 2019 survey revealed that over two-thirds of college students prefer a Mac. Apple has continuously enhanced the Mac, introducing features such as the slim profile of the iMac and the impressive 22-hour battery life of the Macbook Pro. In the rapidly changing landscape of PCs, the Mac has stood the test of time, maintaining its position as the pinnacle of PC-dom.
Greg ‘Joz’ Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, emphasized that the Mac’s success is not merely a result of nostalgia but a testament to its ongoing relevance and innovation. As the Mac enters its fifth decade, Apple affirms its commitment to further evolution, ensuring that the Mac remains at the forefront of the computing industry.
