Apple Developing Specialized AI Chip for Data Centers

Apple is reportedly delving deeper into the realm of artificial intelligence with the development of a dedicated chip for AI data centers. The tech giant has been making significant investments in AI technology, and now it seems poised to unveil its own generative AI to the public. Recent reports suggest that Apple is working on a specialized chip designed to power AI processing in data centers, a move that could potentially give the company a competitive edge in the AI landscape.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Apple is in the process of creating ‘AI chips’ for data centers, with the intention of supporting new AI-driven features set to be revealed at the upcoming WWDC 2024 event. Sources familiar with the matter have indicated that Apple’s project, codenamed ‘ACDC’ (Apple Chips in Data Center), aims to develop a chip tailored for running artificial intelligence software on server systems.

Analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities recently mentioned that Apple is utilizing both M2 Ultra and M4 chips to power servers dedicated to the new AI features expected to debut with iOS 18. These features, based on generative AI, are anticipated to be a focal point of Apple’s software updates to be announced at WWDC 2024 in June. Additionally, Apple has been working on its own language models capable of offline operation, although the company recognizes the benefits of online alternatives for enhanced accuracy.

Prior reports have indicated that Apple has been in talks with OpenAI and Google regarding the integration of their AI technologies into iOS 18. It remains uncertain whether Apple will opt for partnerships with external entities or rely solely on its in-house server solutions.
