AMC’s ‘Monsieur Spade’ Depicts American Detective in Unexpected Light

In a new six-part series from AMC, the American detective Sam Spade, played by Clive Owen, is depicted in an unexpected light. Titled ‘Monsieur Spade,’ the show is set in 1963, two decades after the events of the iconic film ‘The Maltese Falcon.’ This time, the retired detective is residing in the village of Bozouls in the South of France.

The series, written by Scott Frank and Tom Fontana, presents a surprising portrayal of Spade, showing him undergoing a prostate check and being advised to quit smoking. The narrative unfolds as Spade, living quietly in the South of France, mourns his late wife, Gabrielle. Flashbacks reveal his initial encounter with a wealthy widow, Gabrielle, leading to their marriage and Spade inheriting her estate.

However, the tranquility is disrupted when Spade’s past resurfaces, setting the stage for new adventures and challenges. The storyline offers a fresh perspective on the character of Sam Spade, captivating audiences with its intriguing portrayal of the retired detective in a picturesque setting.
