ABC Affiliate Mixes Up Carolina Panthers in Stanley Cup Final Coverage

An ABC affiliate in Los Angeles recently made a humorous mistake by promoting the Carolina Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final, mixing up the NHL’s Florida Panthers with the NFL team. The mix-up occurred during the local news broadcast on KABC 7 just before the Game 1 coverage between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers.

The graphic displayed on the broadcast featured the logo of the Edmonton Oilers on the left, followed by a comparison of the stats of the two teams in the middle. However, on the right side of the graphic, instead of showing the Florida Panthers logo, it mistakenly displayed the logo of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers.

This confusion is not uncommon when dealing with teams that share similar names. In the past, we have seen instances where the Carolina Panthers were mistakenly referred to as just ‘Carolina’ in graphics during games against other teams.

What added to the amusement in this case was that the NFL’s Carolina Panthers logo not only features a Panther but also includes the words ‘Carolina Panthers.’ Despite the mix-up, the broadcast team did correctly identify the Edmonton Oilers as the opposing team, avoiding another potential error.

While the mix-up provided a light-hearted moment for viewers, it serves as a reminder of the importance of attention to detail, especially when it comes to sports graphics and team identifications. With at least three more games remaining in the Stanley Cup Final, fans will be watching closely to see if any more amusing mishaps occur.
