ABB and MAN Energy Solutions Collaborate on Energy-Efficient Propulsion Concept for LNG Carriers

ABB and MAN Energy Solutions have collaborated to develop a new energy-efficient propulsion concept for LNG carriers, known as the Dual Fuel, Electric+ (DFE+) concept. This innovative solution has been recognized by DNV as a more energy-efficient alternative, combining MAN’s four-stroke 49/60DF dual fuel engine with ABB’s Dynamic AC power distribution and control system.

According to reports, the DFE+ concept has achieved a remarkable 7.5% increase in energy efficiency and a reduction in emissions. This development is a significant step forward in meeting the increasingly stringent emissions regulations while simultaneously cutting down fuel costs.

Prof. George Dimopoulos, Scientific Advisor at DNV, highlighted the potential of the ABB – MAN propulsion concept, emphasizing its effectiveness in helping LNG carriers comply with tightening emissions regulations and reducing fuel expenses.

Furthermore, the DFE+ concept’s modular and flexible design has been acknowledged for enhancing cargo capacity by 5%, as confirmed by DNV’s Maritime Advisory assessment. This feature positions it as a competitive and energy-efficient alternative for dual-fuel LNG carrier propulsion designs, addressing the challenges posed by stricter emissions regulations and fuel costs.

With over 200 LNG carriers in the current global order book and emissions regulations becoming more stringent, there is a growing need for new technologies to meet the specific requirements of this class of ships. Rune Lysebo, Strategic Market Development at ABB Marine & Ports, emphasized the urgency for owners to adopt new technologies to comply with the evolving regulations.

This collaboration between ABB and MAN Energy Solutions signifies a significant advancement in the maritime industry’s pursuit of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly propulsion systems for LNG carriers. As the industry continues to navigate the challenges of emissions regulations and fuel costs, innovations like the DFE+ concept are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of LNG carrier propulsion.
