A civil lawsuit has been filed against Texas Tech basketball player Pop Isaacs, accusing him of sexually assaulting a minor during a team trip to the Bahamas in November. The lawsuit was filed in Lubbock County (Texas) District Court by the parents of the girl who alleges she was sexually assaulted.
The lawsuit claims that the girl, who was 17 at the time of the alleged incident, was intoxicated and unable to give consent, despite the age of consent in the Bahamas being 16. It seeks $1 million in damages.
Allegations in the lawsuit state that a Texas Tech booster provided alcoholic drinks to Isaacs and a teammate, who were in a room with two girls aged 17 and 16. The lawsuit alleges that Isaacs and the 17-year-old girl went to another room, where she was sexually assaulted after attempting to resist.
According to the lawsuit, Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland was informed of the situation on Dec. 14 and reported it to athletic director Kirby Hocutt and other university officials.
Texas Tech responded to the allegations by stating that they were immediately reported to the Title IX office, which initiated its own investigation. The athletics department reached out to the Title IX office twice and was informed that Isaacs ‘remains in good standing’ and there is no reason to withhold him from university activities, including basketball competition. The Title IX office will continue its independent process until completed, regardless of the civil lawsuit.
Isaacs has played in all 13 games this season for Texas Tech, averaging 15.8 points and 3.4 assists. Texas Tech (11-2) is scheduled to play at Texas on Saturday.
As the situation unfolds, the allegations against Isaacs have raised concerns and prompted an investigation into the claims. The legal process will determine the outcome of the case, while Texas Tech continues to address the matter in accordance with its policies and procedures.
