No. 9 UConn overcomes injury to Edwards, beats Providence 86-53 to advance in Big East Tournament
UNCASVILLE, Conn. — No. 9 UConn displayed resilience as they overcame the loss of star center Aaliyah Edwards to secure an 86-53 victory against Providence in the Big East quarterfinals on Saturday. Paige Bueckers led the charge with 29 points, supported by freshman KK Arnold who contributed 17 points, propelling the Huskies to a conference semifinal for the 36th consecutive season.
Despite Edwards leaving the game in the second half due to a facial injury, UConn, who entered the tournament with just eight available players, rallied to outscore Providence 45-18 after her exit. UConn coach Geno Auriemma expressed the team’s resilience in the face of adversity, having already coped with five season-ending injuries prior to the tournament.
Grace Efosa stood out for Providence, delivering 23 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome UConn’s determination. The Friars, who trailed by just 10 points at halftime, were unable to maintain their momentum in the second half.
UConn’s Bueckers, who also secured nine rebounds and six assists, emphasized the team’s heightened focus following Edwards’ injury, leading them to a commanding victory. The return of Edwards to the bench with just over five minutes left in the game was a significant moment, as she received a warm ovation from the crowd, reassuring her teammates and fans of her well-being.
