Saturday’s UFC 299 Prelims Recap

Saturday’s UFC 299 prelims were loaded with talent and important matchups, and when the action hit the Octagon at Kaseya Center, the athletes delivered in spades. From a veteran leaving on a high note and young prospects impressing to a new contender emerging at flyweight and a heavyweight stalwart showing he’s still in the mix, the early slate in Miami featured a little bit of everything and set the stage for the pay-per-view main card.

Here’s a look at how things played out to begin UFC 299:

  • Jack Della Maddalena defeats Gilbert Burns by KO (knee and elbows) at 3:43 of Round 3
  • Petr Yan defeats Song Yadong by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Curtis Blaydes defeats Jailton Almeida by TKO (strikes) at 0:36 of Round 2
  • Maycee Barber defeats Katlyn Cerminara by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
  • Mateusz Gamrot defeats Rafael Dos Anjos by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
  • Kyler Phillips defeats Pedro Munoz by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Philipe Lins defeats Ion Cutelaba by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Michel Pereira defeats Michal Oleksiejczuk by submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:01 of Round 1
  • Robelis Despaigne defeats Josh Parisian by TKO (strikes) at 0:18 of Round 1
  • Asu Almabayev defeats CJ Vergara by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Joanne Wood defeats Maryna Moroz by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

Joanne Wood and Maryna Moroz kicked off the action at UFC 299 in a rematch of their April 2015 battle in Krakow, Poland, cracking on each other for the final 10 minutes in a spirited back-and-forth affair. Moroz dominated the first after putting Wood on the deck, but over the second and third, the fight was contested on the feet and the action was too competitive to definitively say who got the better of the exchanges. Late in the third, Wood connected with a spinning back fist that put Moroz on Dream Street, leading to a dominant final stretch for the Scottish veteran. The judges were tasked with determining the victor, and when the scores were tallied, it was Wood that came out ahead, earning a measure of revenge and a victory in what is her final UFC appearance. The TUF 20 alum goes out with a 9-8 mark inside the Octagon and a career record of 17-8 overall.
